Thing 24 – Reflections

I have finally come to the end of the 25 Things and I must say I have really enjoyed learning about lots of things I had never heard of before. It has been great fun reading the other blogs to see if they were enjoyig it as much as I was (I think Linda is going to need a big lie down after all this, nearly as much as I will, trying to keep up with her posts!!!!) Pheww!

As some of the other bloggers have already pointed out, 1 hour per week was not nearly enough to do justice to learning about all the different things and maybe a litle more help (idiot instructions) were needed for things like adding pictures, links etc.

My favourite discovery was Facebook, much to my childrens dismay. They think I’m only on there to snoop!! who me?! It’s a great way to keep in touch with family and friends and to share photos, but after last weeks announcement that Facebook have the rights to all photos, videos , content etc I think that it may be a better idea to use Flickr for sharing your photos and videos with your friends and family. I found their website easy to use and had great fun using the mash-ups on there too. You Tube was another time thief. You could loose hours of your time just watching all the great clips on there. I think Google maps is great for travelling and is really useful for finding addresses in Huddersfield, especially since my daughter started searching for a house. The Image-generating websites were fun and also when I have more time I will look at Podcast‘s again and maybe try to download one onto my i-pod. RSS Feeds I can see as being very useful, if only I had the time to read everything on them…maybe when I’ve retired, but that’s a long way off!! The above things won’t help with my job in the library but it’s useful to know what is going on out there.

The things that I didn’t care too much for were Technorati, Twitter, Google Docs. Twitter, mainly because you already have that covered on Facebook. Google docs because I really can’t see myself needing to use it serouisly for my work (unless I get promoted!!)

Having said all that, I have rather enjoyed my time blogging. Don’t know what I could blog about if I decided to carry on, everyday life can be quite boring and English Lang/Lit wasn’t a strong point for me in my schoolday’s, as you’ve probably already gathered. Thanks to everyone who bothered to read and byeee : )

Thing 23

Thing 23 is to look at podcasts?! which are sound files to listen to. I have to find one of interest and add an RSS feed to my blog. Not quite sure how, exactly I will achieve this, but I will have a go anyhow.

Well I’m not sure I have done it correctly. I will just have to publish this and see if it works as it should. I chose this podcast (after signing up for BBC podcasts with yet another username and password, well, actually I keep using the same ones for everything, the memory isn’t what it used to be!!) for the simple reason that Nolan was my maiden name and no other reason at all. I may try having a listen to it just to make sure it isn’t totally boring…

Thing 22

For Thing 22 I have to look at the YouTube website and find something of interest then add a link to the video clip. My clip is on Boston Terriers with a subtle link to libraries!!

Wow, I’m amazed that that worked!! It’s quite fun watching all the different clips, you could lose hours on there. It almost makes me want to try having a go myself.

Thing 21

For this thing I have signed up to Library Thing and entered in some of the books I have read within the last few years. I’ve actually entered quite a few, but the exact editions shown in the list that comes up when you type in an author isn’t always the one I have read, if you know what I mean..I just picked the first one when it gave loads of different publishers. It’s an easy site to use and I supose reading others comments on what they thought about books you have also read is interesting. I may be tempted to use this site regularly…

Thing 19 & 20

This week it’s online image generators that we have to play around with and try and link to our favourite sites and supply one of our creations. I’m going to have a go with the South Park site because I made quite a cute little girl cartoon on there but am having difficulty saving it, http://www.sp-studio.de/ The picture is the wrong type of file to upload onto here so I will try again. http://www.fototrix.com/border/?border=0-600-480-tennis&version=saved&wrap=image. Woohoo it worked. I chose tennis balls for Otis because he always seems to find one on his walk. Thing 20 was to sign up to Google Doc’s and share a document with another 25 thinger. I managed to do this quite easily and think this would be quite useful for sharing of non-sensetive/confidential information. Thing 17 & 18

Getting close to the end now… Well thing 17 was to sign up to Facebook the social networking site and I thought God, my kids are just going to love this!! So I duly created an account and asked them to be my friends. I wasn’t sure of a positive reaction to this, but they both said yes….I think I am going to regret it though because within minutes my eldest daughter had tagged lots of photos of me. Aaaargh! It seems quite fun and the hours just seem to pass by in an instant. Not sure if I will be bothered to carry on with it ‘cos I can never get on at home as my 2 are always on it!! Will just have to have a look when I’m at work instead. For Thing 18 I signed up to Twitter!! Not sure I will like this because I can’t find anyone on there, only Stephen Fry and I’m not too bothered about his going on’s, so I don’t think I will continue with this one.

Thing 16

Thing16 is to look at Google earth. I know we actually have this downloaded on our home computer, so I will go home and try to remember to have a play on it as instructed and report back on my findings…I’ve got to admit that I haven’t yet been on Google earth at home but from what I can remember of it, it’s very similar to Google map, which I have found to be quite useful.

Week 7- Thing 15

For thing 15 I have had a play with Google map. I did enter the Universities post code and looked at this map in all it’s different guises. The pictures on the sattelite map are clear once you are up close enough to recognise things and I think the shot is quite old as the great hall is still there, this is before I worked here so I am not able to date the pic. Have tried to put a link in to the web page but I’m not having any luck, will try again later. I think Google map would be very helpful if you are travelling somewhere new as you can get quite detailed maps. I may try it in the future.

Week 6-Things 12-14

I’ve not had a lot of time to do this, this week as I’ve been a little poorly, but non the less I have managed to do Thing 14 without even realizing it, so that has saved me a bit of time!! The first random article that came up on Wikipedia was about Homity pie, which if you don’t know ( neither did I ) is an open topped vegetable pie containing potatoes, onions and leeks then covered in cheese. It is said to have originated in the second world war when rationing was being imposed. The first topic on the current events page tells us about the Channel Island of Sark holding it’s first democratic elections!! Also the anti-police riots are still taking place in Athens and several other cities throughout Greece.

Week 5- Play time!!

This week I did as I was told and accepted my invite to the Wet Paint thingy. I’ve had a little play around on the site. Don’t understand really what it is!! I managed to add a link (made a mistake the first time, so I had to so it again)to one of my favourite pubs and started a thread. I will have to wait and see if anyone picks it up, ha ha! My favourite thing we have done so far is creating the flickr account. It’s good fun looking at all the different pics on there and playing with the various tools. Here’s to next week when we may have a little more to do.
